A group of historic homes is being moved and preserved to make way for UNC-Greensboros Glenwood expansion project.
Three homes started their move Friday from the 800 block of Highland Avenue and Gregory Street.
UNCG needs the lots to make way for the proposed mixed-use village along the West Lee Street corridor.
The homes, which are in the Queen Anne and Craftsman styles, were considered to be in good enough quality to remain intact.
Its been fun to watch. They knocked the foundation out and jacked it way up. Its been an interesting sight. Lots of people coming over here to look, said Carolyn Tritthart, resident.
Work to salvage items from the homes started several months ago, and other homes in the area are also being salvaged.
When were all home, we try to save and recycle cans and bottles and things that are recyclable. But we dont often think about an entire house being recyclable, said Benjamin Briggs with Preservation Greensboro.
Some homes in the worst shape were set on fire as practice for Greensboro firefighters.
